Recital--Organ Plus
The Guilford Organ Barn (Guilford, VT, United States)
William McKim
-

Friends of Music at Guilford’s 49th Annual Labor Day Weekend Festival begins on Saturday night, August 30, with “Bs of the Baroque & More” — a 7:30 recital by William McKim on the c. 1897 Tracker Organ in the barn with works by Baroque composers Nicolaus Bruhns, Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, and William Boyce, as well as 19th-century master Johannes Brahms. Soprano Geralyn Donohue and Guilford Chamber Players on flute and cello are featured in a Bach aria. McKim, who has performed in the Barn on a number of prior occasions, sets the stage for his repertoire with informative comments and anecdotes. A festive reception follows. The Festival continues on Sunday afternoon, August 31, at 2:00 p.m., when Ken Olsson conducts the Guilford Festival Orchestra in a lesser-known Mozart symphony (No. 33 in B flat) as well as works by Janáček, Gounod, and Rachmaninoff. Mezzo-soprano Jessica Gelter is featured in the premiere of Three Ballads by Zeke Hecker. The concert ends with an a cappella sing-in of Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia” and a reception. Grounds open at 12 noon on Sunday for picnicking and lunch sales. Children are welcome, dogs are asked to stay home. Both Festival events are admission-free with donations welcome. The Organ Barn is at idyllic Tree Frog Farm, on Kopkind Dr. off Packer Corners Rd., about 9 miles from the Guilford Country Store on Rt. 5, or 5 miles from the Keets Brook Rd. turnoff in Bernardston, Mass. Signs are posted along these routes. Saturday’s concert in the Barn is rain or shine; in case of serious threat of rain on Sunday, the lunch and orchestra concert will be moved to the Broad Brook Grange on Guilford Center Rd. — follow signs from the Guilford Store. Contact the Friends of Music office at (802) 254-3600 or office@fomag.org, or visit online at www.fomag.org, for further...
